Duarte Dennis Machado

January 18, 1938 to February 25, 2023

Duarte Dennis Machado passed away on February 25, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Manuel Jerome Machado, and his brother in law, Arthur Manuel Verissimo.

Dennis was born on January 18, 1938 to Joseph DeRosa Machado and Mariana Ferreira Machado in Palo Alto, California. He graduated from Palo Alto High School and later joined the US Army. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. Discharged in 1963, he returned to work at the Purity Grocery Store in the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. He spent over 30 years in the grocery business.

At home Dennis loved working in his yard. Wherever he lived he made sure to plant the coccos that his parents brought from Pico of the Portuguese Azores. He enjoyed rooting for the San Francisco 49ers and Giants. Dennis loved his treats, especially ice cream and chocolate. He also enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe and all over the US including Hawaii, Illinois, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada and Montana. Everyone he spoke with was treated to some of his Portuguese expressions.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 23 years Teresa Deann, his sister Aurelia Theresa Verissimo, his son Dennis Joseph Machado, his adopted children Katheryn Ann Machado Covington and Tony Machado (Jessica), his step children Shari Holzer (Brad Zevnik) and Jeff Holzer, his grandchildren Katrina Machado, Jessie Machado, Matthew Zevnik, and Rachel Zevnik, James Covington, Jr., Ronald Covington, Carlos Soares, Jr., Joseph Soares, his great grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews. He was sometimes affectionately referred to as Uncle Duke.

Dennis was loving, generous and funny.  A celebration of his life will be held later this year.
