Hugh Edward Bradley was born on November 4, 1934 tof Gladys Pearl Lampe Bradley and Hugh Edward Bradley (Sr) in Olean, NY.  He had the blessing as a boy of growing up in a middle-class neighborhood of a rural city where children attended excellent schools, rode their bikes freely, and played with their neighborhood friends for blocks around.  He loved sailing on nearby Cuba Lake, where the family had a home, in summer.  He studied piano at an early age, and later clarinet and tenor saxophone, in high school playing in the Concert Band, Marching Band, and Dance Band from which came a life-long love of "swing" era music.

Hugh attended MIT in Cambridge, MA.  There he served in the Officer Training Corps as a Sergeant, then Second Lieutenant, in the Pershing Rifles unit.  He was selected for the Cooperative Program in 1954, working alternate semesters as a Student Engineer on advanced radar systems for Philco Corporation in Philadelphia.  On campus he was a WMIT radio announcer for a Sunday classical music program and played clarinet in the Concert Orchestra.  He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering honorary fraternity, and graduated in 1957 with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering.

After 3 years as Research Engineer with Sperry-Rand Corporation in New York, he returned to graduate school, this time Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, as a Gilman Fellow for two years, then a National Science Foundation Fellow his final year.  He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering, specializing in Operations Research and Statistics.

Dr. Bradley was appointed Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1963, where he taught advanced statistics and operations research, and counseled Ph.D. candidates.  In 1967 he joined The Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, MI where he remained for twelve years, beginning as Head of Operations Research, advancing to Group Manager for Information Systems.  In 1976 he was awarded the Upjohn Prize for distinguished accomplishment.  During this period he also held appointments as Adjunct Associate Professor of Management, Economics, and Mathematics at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, and Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Grand Valley State University, in Grand Rapids.  In 1979 he became Director, Corporate Information Systems for Syntex Corporation in Palo Alto, CA, then in 1981 Associate Director for Telecommunications and Computer Services at Kaiser Aluminum Corporation in Oakland, CA.  He joined the Shaklee Corporation, San Francisco in 1985, from which he retired in 1999 as Corporate Vice President of Shaklee and Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer for Shaklee's largest subsidiary, Bear Creek Corporation in Medford, Oregon.

Dr. Bradley was very active in volunteer service to his profession.  He was elected to the governing Council of the Operations Research Society of America in 1975, and over the ensuing fifteen years served the Society not only in this capacity but also as its Treasurer, Vice President, and President.  He also served a three-year term as Vice President of the Institute for Management Sciences.  He was Editor of the journal International Abstracts in Operations Research for eleven years and Treasurer of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies for nine years.  In 1990 he was awarded the George E. Kimball Medal for distinguished service and in 2002 was elected a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 29, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his children and their families, Curt (Angie), Jo (Greg), Shawna (Tom), Greg (Shannon), and Emily (Jay), nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
