Laurence David Abrao

Laurence David Abrao (Larry) of Vacaville, CA died peacefully in his sleep at home on January 6, 2023 at the age of 76.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Erin Abrao Green (William) and Lisa Blansett; stepdaughter, Lisa Blevens; and grandsons, Richard Espinoza III, Ehren Bepler, Scott Green, and Thomas Laurence Green. He is also survived by his sisters, Vicki Sheehan (Russ), Kathy Robison (Mark), and Laurie Pate (Mel); stepbrother, Jerry Patchen; brother-in-law, Larry Lobb (Erica); and his beloved cousins, nephews, nieces, and their families. Larry is preceded in death by his father, Laurence H. Abrao and mother, Sylvia Simo.

Larry was born in Albany, CA and grew up in Richmond, CA. His favorite childhood memories were of the many weekends and summers he spent at his grandparents' cabin outside Cazadero on East Austin Creek in the Russian River area. He was always fond of the California Redwoods. He graduated from Richmond Union High School in 1964 where he was a member of the swimming team. Larry also earned an AS degree in Administration of Justice from Contra Costa College.

After graduating from high school, Larry worked at Standard Oil (Chevron) in Richmond until he joined the Marine Corps in 1965. His decision to join the Marines was due to his patriotism but also his desire for adventure. He wanted to be part of what he considered a fine organization. While in the Marines he served a tour in Vietnam, was stationed in Quantico, Virginia for one year, and served his final year at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in Concord, California, near his hometown. He was awarded the Purple Heart, among several other honors, and he achieved the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1969.

Following his military service, Larry worked for UPS as a driver for five years. He then joined the Richmond Police Department in 1974 and was an officer and detective. Through his training and experience, he became an accomplished professional investigator. He loved the city of Richmond and was dedicated in his service to Richmond's citizens. During his time with the Richmond Police Department, he was awarded Officer of the Year as well as Detective of the Year. He had an excellent reputation throughout the Bay Area law enforcement community. He retired in 2000

In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, spending time with his wife and family, and being Grandpa Larry to his four grandsons. He also enjoyed playing golf and working in the yard and in his garage. He looked forward to his Friday morning breakfasts with his retired "police buddies" and the many social gatherings with Linda and friends in their neighborhood. He loved to laugh and share stories. He always felt his home was his sanctuary.

When asked about his hopes for his children and grandchildren, he replied, "I hope that they are able to achieve comfort and happiness, whatever that may mean to each of them." He also said, "I only hope that my family and friends remember me as a decent and dependable person."

Larry was a loving, wonderful husband, a proud father and grandfather, a trusted and faithful friend, and a true patriot. He will be lovingly remembered.
