Obituary

Mary Madeline Mellow was born June 17, 1922 in Cassel, California. She passed on July 12, 2021 in Livermore, California. Mary grew up in Mount Shasta, CA where she attended grammar school and Mount Shasta High School, graduating in 1940. She received a scholarship to Staton's Beauty School in Chico, CA and was a licensed operator for several years. While in Mount Shasta she opened Mary's Beauty Salon.
Mary was employed at Kilpatrick and Dunn dry goods store as a sales clerk and buyer. She made trips to San Francisco as the buyer, always purchasing only one of an outfit that only she would have. She would make the bank deposits for the store. On one of those walks she spotted
a handsome young man driving a truck through town saying she was going to marry him someday.
That young man was named George Mellow. Her prediction came true. They were married on May 4, 1944 in Reno, NV. Their 67-year marriage ended May 4, 2011, the day that George passed away.
Mary was a stay-at-home mother of three daughters. While the girls were in grammar school and high school, Mary was always involved supporting their activities and also served as PTA president among other roles. After her children were grown she worked as a clerk in a gift shop
and then at Mechanics Bank as a bank teller.
Throughout her life she was known as a wonderful hostess, cook, baker, and candy maker. There were many holiday dinners, often for 30, she prepared single-handed. But Christmas was the best! She would make dozens of varieties of cookies and candies, loaves of Italian Panetone and
batches of pizzelles.
Mary loved life, friends, a good time, camping with friends and grandchildren in their trailer/ fifth-wheel after retirement, the San Francisco Giants, and hummingbirds. But most of all she loved her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren who brought her so much joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, George J. Mellow; her parents, Giuseppe and Maddalena Lombardi; brothers Vincent and Joseph Lombardi; and sisters Margaret Marotto and Ann Silva.
She is survived by daughters Sheryl (Gary) Scott of Fairfield, CA, Susan Page of Livermore, CA, Sally (Ronald) Bailey of Fairfield, CA; nephew Ronald (Sandra) Marotto of Goleta, CA; grandchildren Karen Scott, Kevin Scott, Scott (Holly) Page, Stacy Davis, Shane (Trevor Fishburn) Page, Phillip (Megan) Bailey, and Rhonda Bailey; great-grandchildren David Scott, Payton, Gavin, Olivia, Weston, and Kellen Scott, Madelyn and Colton Page, Kayla Davis, and Ryan and Dylan Bailey.
Mary's family would also like to thank her Stratford Villa Family in Livermore, CA for their love, care, and attention given Mom where she was a resident the past twenty-eight months.
Services will take place on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Vaca Hills Chapel Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 a.m. for Viewing, 11:00 a.m. Rosary, and 11:30 a.m. Catholic Prayer Service.
