Mary Joe
Mudgett
May 1, 1934 — May 17, 2026
Mary Joe Mudgett passed away on May 17, 2026, at the age of 92. Mary Joe had a long battle with dementia and passed peacefully at the Cogir Assisted Living facility apartment she shared with her husband until his passing almost 2 years ago.
Mary Joe was born on May 1, 1934, in Ada, Oklahoma to Charles Owen Ogden and Katie Olene Ogden. She was the youngest of 4 children. She often talked about when her family left Oklahoma and went to California, during the "Dust Bowl" of the 1930s, she was 3 years old. They settled in Sanger, CA, a small town near Fresno, CA, where she went through school. One weekend her brother Kenny, who was in the Air Force, stationed at Castle AFB, in Atwater, CA, brought a friend home for some good home cooking and that man was Hal Mudgett. She and Hal married and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Hal worked in Civil Service at Nellis AFB and Mary Joe worked in bookkeeping at a Bank. Kristie was born in Fresno, CA, and their son Danny Mudgett was born in Las Vegas and their family was complete.
In 1963 they moved back to Sanger, CA, where they lived until moving to Vacaville, CA, in 1967. Hal worked at Travis AFB and mom started working for the City of Vacaville. Hal and Mary Joe were very active in bowling leagues and golfing. They did a lot of traveling over the years and if they bought a new car it had to have enough room in the trunk for 2 golf bags!
They had a very happy life and had many friends and were always out socializing.
They hosted Christmas for many years and all of the kids loved going to Papa & Nana's house.
In 2023 they decided to move to an assisted living facility & they chose Cogir of Vacaville. The experience at Cogir was wonderful, the staff is very caring and helpful and always seemed to take special care of them. Rosemarie the head of the med techs started calling Mary Joe, MJ and it was very sweet.
She is survived by her daughter, Kristie Doyel, son Danny Joe Mudgett (Katie), granddaughter Erin Davenport (Steve), grandson Ryan (Sarah), granddaughter
Tori Ferguson, grandson Austin Mudgett, great grandchildren, Mary Doyel Crabbe (Matthew), Adrienne Davenport, Brandon Doyel, Bennie Doyel, Stevie Davenport, Lily Davenport, Aliina Doyel, Warren Doyel & Charlie Davenport.
Mary Joe was preceded in death by her husband Hal Mudgett, her parents Charles Ogden, Katie Shults, and her stepdad Scrub Shults, brothers Chuck Ogden, Kenny Ogden and sister Ramona Scott and her son in law Chuck Doyel.
Mary Joe will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, in Dixon, CA, with her husband Hal Mudgett. The funeral service will be at Vaca Hills Chapel, 524 Elmira Road, Vacaville, CA, followed by graveside service at SVNC in Dixon. Mary Joe's grandson Ryan Doyel will be the officiant.
