Mercedes
Cruz
Sep 25, 1938 — Apr 17, 2025
Mercedes Enriquez Cruz, born in Norzagaray Bulacan, Philippines, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on April 17, 2025 at the age of 86. Mercedes worked as a municipal employee in her hometown for a few years, before staying home full time to take care of her children. In 1986, she migrated to the United States with her late husband, Jose Cruz, and three younger children.
Upon arriving to the U.S, Mercedes, also known as "Mercy," "Chedeng," or" Ched," worked a few part time jobs before becoming an airport screener, a job that she truly enjoyed. She approached her work with enthusiasm and grace, always bringing a smile to her coworkers and airport travelers. Mercedes was known for her kindness, her strength and sense of humor. After working there for many years, she decided to leave her job to take care of her handicapped daughter full time.
Mercedes enjoyed cooking, dining out, watching Filipino movies or tv shows, and playing slot machines at the casino occasionally. Her "famous" tempura chicken, beef kaldereta and pancit, among many others, brought comfort and joy to those gathered around the table. Mercedes will be remembered for her strength, her laughter, and the unwavering love she gave to her family and friends.
Mercedes is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Cruz, her parents and four siblings. She has one living sister who resides in the Philippines.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Joel and Nita, Josie & Chris, Liza, Richard and Malou, Marie and Wade and Jhoanna and Rommel, 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren yet to be born.
