Raymond R. George (Ray or "Grumpy Grandpa" to his beloved grandchildren)

Raymond R. George, born on December 2, 1930, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, service, and love. Born to Antone and Angelina George, Ray grew up working on the family dairy farm in Santa Cruz. He graduated from Santa Cruz High in 1948, though he often joked he graduated from the "School of Hard Knocks."

Ray's early years on the dairy farm were spent working tirelessly alongside his family. After purchasing the family dairy and managing it with his wife for a few years, Ray transitioned to a new chapter. He moved his family into town and began working for the City of Santa Cruz as a heavy equipment operator. Over a career spanning 30 years, Ray earned a reputation for his dedication and reliability. Beyond his professional role, he served in the police reserves for many years, contributing to the safety of his community.

In 1968, Ray joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary, dedicating 50 years to this esteemed organization. His service was marked by numerous honors, including recognition for acts of bravery that saved lives at great personal risk. Ray's advanced knowledge of the ocean, its currents, and the coastline made him an exceptional boatman. He could navigate by dead reckoning when necessary, a skill that set him apart and often proved invaluable. His family often joined him in his service, sharing in his commitment to helping others.

On August 12, 1951, Ray married the love of his life, Delores J. Bettencourt. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual respect. Ray is survived by his wife Delores; his children Diana M. Ehresman and Susan A. George (and her spouse Ken Stiles); and his grandchildren Erik V. Ehresman (and his wife Leah Ehresman) and Katie M. Johansen (and her husband Wes Johansen).
Ray had a passion for life that extended beyond his work. He was an avid reader, a skilled hunter, and a proud member of a local gun club. Known for his exceptional marksmanship, Ray often surprised others with his ability to shoot left-handed despite being right-handed. Stories of Ray and his horse Robin on the dairy were cherished family lore. His love for animals and his family was evident in his acts of service, big and small, that demonstrated his unwavering devotion.

Ray's life was defined by his commitment to his community. Whether through his career, his time with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, or his personal endeavors, Ray was always willing to lend a helping hand. His family often sacrificed time with him so that he could pursue his passion for service, a sacrifice they made with understanding and pride.

Ray's legacy of love, dedication, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
