Thomas Raymond Thaanum

Thomas Raymond Thaanum, age 86, passed away on October 20, 2025, at his home in Vacaville, California. He was surrounded by family members.

Born on July 18, 1939, in Seattle, Washington, Tom graduated from West Seattle High School in 1957. He honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1981, retiring as a Colonel. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Puget Sound in 1969, followed by an MBA in Finance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1975.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Thaanum, his sister Nancy McGregor, and his ex-wife Judy Thaanum. He is survived by his son, Michael Thaanum, and his daughter, Kelly Thaanum.

With a big smile and a hearty laugh that could fill any room, Tom wore many hats throughout his life. The military shaped the structure he held true to. He served two tours in Vietnam (USAF Combat Control Teams) and was awarded many decorations for his service in the elite units of the US Air Force whose mission was to control air traffic and ensure mission safety during airlifts. Tom retired with honor at Travis Air Force Base in 1981 with family at his side. From 1980 to 1993, he served as an undergraduate instructor at Solano Community College. He worked as an Assistant Vice President of Accounting at the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco from 1981 to 1999. At the Fed, Tom found, built and maintained life long friendships he didn't know he needed but cherished to the end. In the military he formed bonds and integrity that never broke. In 1975, anticipating his military retirement and a move to California, he purchased his first rental property, ultimately acquiring eight homes alongside his other careers.

Tom was passionate about many hobbies. He built and maintained an MG TC, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, had an eye for displaying colorful artwork and carvings, and loved to socialize, often hosting epic gatherings for family, friends, and colleagues who made him smile. Additionally, he enjoyed collecting stamps and rare coins.

Tom became the voice of reason to many of Mike and Kelly's friends, whom became extended family, and was fondly referred to as 'Pop' by all. He brought in everyone as his own and gave sound life advice with subtle sarcasm and wit and always with a quote to remember said lesson.

With Tom, there certainly never was a dull moment. He is cherished and loved and will be missed dearly.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held for Thomas R. Thaanum on December 4, 2025 at 1:30 P.M. at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery; 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, California.
